Question whats this pipe? (poss problem)

Apologies for the poor picture quality but can someone tell me what this 90 degree pipe is for...

The only reason I ask is our Cooper S was making a strange noise the other day, and this pipe was the cause. It was a slight whistling noise, so i'm guessing there's a hole in it (nothing obvious). There are also no fixings (ie jubilee clips) - which means it's moving quite easily - surely thats not right either?

Thanks in advance.

Its the breather pipe. After a while the rubber deteriorates and collapses under the vacuum making the strange noise you can hear. Happens all the time, and you can get a replacement from your dealer. Alternatively consider an oil catch can which replaces this pipe.

I have exactly the same question. My Cooper S doesnt whistle, but this pipe is very loose.
I was looking at another S the other day, and there was no jubilee clips on it but the pipe was much tighter.
Can anyone tell us what this does?
I think the solution will be to fit jubilee clips??

Great, ta. That's good enough for me. Time to buy a new one and put a couple of jubilee clips on.... then to get onto sorting out the other problems

This happened to my MCS a few months back - I think the replacement was £3.67.

I changed my intercooler recently so bought an oil catch can which replaced the aforementioned pipe.

I've just been into the local bmw dealer, who looked at the car, and sold me the following pipe/hose. (#2)

Part no: 11151524087

Mmm, not convinced though, as I dont think it'll fit.. pipe looks too small a bore. Will fit tomorrow ...

That is the correct part although I ended up ripping the bit off that I needed and discarding the rest!

As mentioned previously don't need that bit anymore with the oil catch can.

Cheers - I did exactly what you said...pulled off the hose and just replaced that. Sorted!

oh, just a few now...
  • rear brake pads need replacing, and the brake sensor at the same time.
  • common (it seems) 1 second grinding noise when pulling away in first gear each morning...[been told its clutch bearings, and not worth spending the money to replace clutch]
  • xenon bulb failed the other day, on for it to work again once refitted, so perhaps thats just a connection worked loose which is ok again now?
... just got to get them sorted soon for my wife's frustrations to reduce a little....else it's up for sale!

This just happened to mine a few days ago. The car sounds like a kettle. The dealer has ordered in the parts and now im just waiting for them to arrive. Glad to hear it is nothing to serious than.

Its a rocker cover blow off pipe.

Basically it carries air and oil overflow...this feeds into a small plastic pipe that runs under the IC and down. This is were you would plumb a oil catch can in to reduce blow-off oil entering the supercharger and IC. if its got a leak its not a problem really but just get a pice of rubber hose or silicone or something to replace it with. I detached mine and drove round for a day or 2 and it still ran now got a nice shiny red bit of pipe there looking nice

This is the most unprofessional bit of site management I have seen since I was banned from a certain other site...at least they had the excuse that they were enthusiasts who had strong views and not professionals paid to keep thier cool!

Grab both pipes and pull / twist at the same time. It is hard to come off.

When installing the new one spray a little WD 40 on the plastic pipe.

As Snowie says, you've got to twist it when you pull the hose ... otherwise I reckon you'd snap the hose (it felt like it). Twisting it and it'll come off fine.
