One / Cooper 5spd Midland to 6speed S Getrag Conversion

This is a modification we’ve been talking about for quite some time at 1320, but unfortunately it’s been on that long list of to dos with a whole lot of other stuff!

So it was so nice when a customer aka Richard22b rang up for a gearbox for his One but really liked the idea of fitting a 6spd and an Exedy flywheel / clutch combo.

We have tried breaking our 6speed on the 1320 car for the last 160 runs at the drags strip, without any success, so we knew it made perfect sense to replace a known weak link with a seemingly ‘unbreakable’ one.

The worst part of the job has been deciding whether this post should be under the forum heading Engine & Drivetrain Tuning / Faults and Fixes / MINI One / MINI Cooper

Test driving the car I was surprised how it had been transformed. This is how they should have left the factory – FUN, FUN, FUN! 1st gear is now a little taller so the 1st to 2nd rpm drop had improved. The old One’s 3rd gear has been replaced with 3rd and 4th in the S box so keeping it in the power band. It also cruises very comfortably at a respectable speed in 6th – the car was a joy to drive.

I would like to thank Richard as our first customer for this conversion and Steve Rogers at Exedy for his help with this project.

So if you’re looking for an upgrade or if your gearbox has just given up we can do the conversion for you or supply all the parts for you to do it yourself.

That is really interesting and giving hope. Any chance of providing pictures and more details on complexity / price?

I can second that.

The car is a joy to drive now without the worry of over pushing the gearbox.

With the previous setup we discovered I had cracked the Fly wheel and killed the gearbox.

Plus most importantly the service I got with 1320Autos was fantastic. They explained everything to me and made sure the end product was what I wanted.

If anyone wants to see the end product or ask my views please feel free to get hold of me.

Ok that would be great.

I'm surprised there aren't any more reactions to this post as the one and cooper really have a weak spot with the Midland gearbox.

Shoudn't we have this thread moved to Perf & engine mods?

Any more info on pieces, labor time would be great!

So does this retain the Midlands case and shafts (ie can retain the same flywheel and clutch etc, and just change the gearset), or did this involve effectively bolting a 6 speed complete box onto the One?

I've already got a nice clutch / flywheel, but I just keep wearing out 2nd gear (just broke my 4th gearbox on the weekend).

You have to change Gearbox, driveshafts, flywheel, clutch, gearstick and cables, N/S gearbox mounting.

Have you got any ballpark prices to supply and fit one to a 2002 mini cooper?

1320autos, nice to see you've done the conversion nicely. Question is: Do you know what's involved in fitting a Getrag 5sp to a 2002 (Midlands) Cooper?

Thanks for the info so far.

Its exactly the same deal plus you have to change the airfilter box because the gearbox chassis mount is different.

We supplied and fitted the same conversion a couple of weeks ago.

But I did prefer the 6spd

I would rather give you an accurate figure, If you can hang on to next week because there's not enough hours in the day at the moment, customers keep wanting to make horsepower

Richard22b,

Many questions..
Can you show us interior pics of the conversion? More feedback after a couple of days?
How's the cruising bit on the highway in 6th?

Is your one mapped to cooper levels?

I'm really looking forward to a mod like this..

What exactly would you like a pic of?

Still running smoothly. Clutch is becoming slightly easier. Not sure if that's because my left leg is getting bigger or if its just getting easier with use.

Cruising in 6th is very good. It's just a long distance economy gear.

My ONE is tuned and is producing approx 127BHP. But this is with a map plus performance parts eg exhaust, induction

Anything else just ask

How much did this conversion cost you.
My gearbox is dead, I was going to exchange it with reconditioned one. But now I am considering 6 speed gearbox.
If the costs are similar ofcourse.
Please tell us the prices.

ps: 1320autos your website is not working.
