Red Cooper Midland Gearbox: Ticking

I have an October '02 built Cooper - with the Midland Gearbox

I was out today planning for a run I am putting together and noticed a strange ticking noise which has got worse. It only happens when in motion, is not revs related and GOES AWAY when in neutral.

The higher up the gear range I go, the worse it gets (5th gear doing 50MPH the ticking is unbearable) I have tried to take a video with my camera but the noise doesnt come out over the video.

Im just wondering what this could possibly be - gearbox or clutch? Or Both? All of the other threads I searched for and read the noise was apparent when idle too, whereas mine isnt

Any help appreciated

I have the same problem with my Mini Cooper 51. I took to BMw and they informed that i was in need of a new gearbox at only 44,000 miles!! I am currently in the process of challenging BMW on this issue as it is a very common problem with the Midland box. So far they have offered 50% towards the cost of the new box but no labour! So, they have admitted liability and i am taking it further. Also it may be wise to get a second opinion as a mate of mine with the same noise took it to an independant garage and they changed her gearbox oil and the noise completely dissapeared!! It seems that BMW are no different to any other dealership and want your hard earned cash! Keep me posted on your outcome.

Are you still within your warranty/tlc pack?

I am in the same boat as you guys, I have a 2003 MINI Cooper with almost 94,000. I had my 2nd gearbox changed at only 45,000 miles because of that same ticking noise you are hearing. NOW AT ALMOST 94,000 MILES I HAVE TO GET THE TRANNY REPLACED AGAIN!!!!!!! LETS SEE THIS WILL BE MY THIRD TRANNY, THIRD CLUTH , AND SECOND FLYWHEEL. WOW WHAT A FRICKIN GOOD SOLID CAR I GOT !!!

It is sad that I saw somebody int the newspaper with a 1988 Honda Accord with well of 600,000 miles on it, with its original tranny and engine. BMW NEEDS TO BE ASAMED OF THEMSELVES!!
