EVEN MORE Gearbox Help :(

Many of you will already know this and are probably getting sick of my posts about my car going wrong, but I will give background info anyways.....I have recently had to replace the gearbox for the 3rd time after a total 77000miles. It was a reconditioned box fitted around 2 weeks ago. About 1 week ago I have started to hear a noise as if a tin can is stuck underneath the car when accelerating in 1st and 2nd gear. The doesnt seem to happen everytime but happens often under hard acceleration. I will of course jack up the car to search for a can because as it happens, one went under my car on the motorway and its only since then I have noticed it. However.. if there is no can, does this sound like it could be coming from the gearbox?

I have lost all faith in my car now, as the PAS has started to play up, cutting out on the motorway and while parking. Now this noise, I am literally waiting for it to break while I do my 100 mile per day commutes

Any help and advice is very much appreciated

Dan

Get rid is my advice..I stuck with my problems on my old Cooper for 18 months, it really gets you down after a while and I was glad to see the back end of mine as it was driven off into the sunset.

Sometimes the exhaust manifold heat shield can come loose and drop down, other than that its look and hope its something silly.

You did get a good gearbox warranty with it didn't you??

I live my little car but at this moment in time, getting rid seems like the only thing to solve everything!

Got 12 months, so if something does go then obviously it will be sorted. But I just dont want the hassle! I have just jacked her up and took a look underneath, I cant see anything at all under there, iv looked from all angles. Took her out for a drive again, accelerating hard under 1st and 2nd gear and i hear the noise at about 4k revs, then it continues through into 2nd gear and continues on deceleration of 2nd gear untill the revs drop past about 3k.

You dont think it sounds like the box then?

Turn up the music, drive faster and ignore the noises.

I no its alot of hassle leaveing your car with the garage but if its got a 12month warrenty with it, that might be the best idea or at least get a mechanic in the car with you when it happens.

did you get it replaced at a main dealer??

Some good and bad news on the noise front! Garage had a listen to it and its definitely not gearbox noise. They said if it was it would sort of follow the rev range in volume/pitch, and it would be noticeable in almost every gear, this is only noticeable in 1st and 2nd at around 4 - 5k revs. It does sound more like a rattle too.

So its been up on the ramp and the engine bay has been checked. All nuts tightened etc etc but they dont know what the noise is. Told me to see how it goes, if it gets any worse just tot ake it back to them.

Right.. now to get the PAS sorted!
