I spoke to a mini service adviser about an hour ago, and he suggested that sometimes the window motors shut off due to heat--to just give it a few hours, then try again before making a service appointment. He thought this may be the problem because my windows had failed once before, but recovered a few minutes later. Has anyone heard of this happening?

Have a search in the faults and fixes forum and you'll find lots of threads on dodgy windows. two basic do it yourself fixes Hold the window switch in the up positiion for several seconds and it resets the window operation. I can't remember how many seconds, it is on here somewhere, if you try 15 seconds then that is more than required. Hit the door, again I can't remember the exact position to hit but try a search and it will be revealed. If these do not work then you probably need a replacement motor.

Thanks for the reply, Mike. The problem seems to have fixed itself. I just went back out to the car, to try it for the third time, and the windows would not go. Then I turned the motor on and after letting the car run for a few minutes the window began to work again. Thanks for the tips about holding the switch up.

My paasenger side window has been doing this intermittently since I hit the end of the warratny period. It started when it was sitting in the sun all day, though it worked fine most of the winter. Resetting the switch (holding up for 10 sec) used to work, but hasn't lately. I suspect I'll end up getting it replaced, since it's getting a little warm in there! ![]()

I spoke to a MINI service person who told me that in high heat the window motor will actually shut off to protect itself. He said that after letting it cool off for a while it would be fine, and sure enough it was, but an hour and a half was a bit much. Anyone have any idea how much replacement would cost?

Dominic I had exactly the same prob and was quoted £240 by bmw to fix it....ugh!! Bought 2nd hand motor on ebay for £8 which works and have just spent 2 hrs trying to fix it but need special tool to lift old motor out. So read pages here and did what s`one on these pages said which is to strike the door hard just below the dr catch (this is where the motor is) and the motor now works. A mechnic friend of mine reckons it`s as simple as the motor just jamming occasionally. We shall see. GOOD LUCK. Dominic. |

windows won't unroll My drivers window didn't work on cooper s that i have just purchased so i tried advice given of holding switch up for 10 secs but this didn't work. I then tried htting the panel between the two speakers ,first two hits were a bit weak so hit a bit harder and would you believe the window now works. I wonder what BMW would have done and how much they would have charged. I agree this is a crude method but thanks forum members for advice. Vaughan.
