cooper s cutting out!! can`t get it fixed, help!

Hi, desperate for help with my july 03 standard spec cooper s,
Problem is car drives fine but feels a little down on power at low speeds, but at 5800 rpm it all goes wrong!! the traction control light flashes and the engine returns to tickover with no throttle response at all until you turn off the ignition off and restart, it then drives fine until you go above 5800 again!! it has so far cost me a small fortune, having been in 2 separate mini garages and had both air mass meters replaced, new throttle housing and even a new throttle pedal, it comes up with fault code stating air mass meter is faulty, although changing this still shows same fault!
All the loom and connectors have been checked thoroughly, it`s driving me mad! only other item that has been changed is the breather hose as this was collapsing!!

It`s a great car but i might as well have a diesel one at the min as cannot use any performance in this car at min, It is pretty alarming/dangerous when cuts out and has nearly put me off the road twice now.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Sounds just like the problem I had ten minutes after buying the car! They replaced the air bypass valve and all was good with the world!!

Wow... sounds like the same problem as ours. I just put a post up about it. I will mention this to the garage also...

It was pretty alarming when it happened to me, I pulled out to overtake, floored it and the EML, MIL and traction control light lit up, no power at all. I had to pull back in and shut the engine down. It only took BMW a couple of hours to fix.

I just had this happen to me twice today and scared the crap out of me. I've got to take it in tomorrow and hope it's as simple as some of you mention.
