Weird Noise from steering

Hello all, i have had my MCS Works for about ten months now but its a 54 reg, and over the last few months ive notice a weird noise coming from the steering sometimes, its normally when I'm doing a 90" turn either backwards or forwards it sounds like someone sliding a chair backwards on a tiled floor or something, Its like a scrapping noise mixed with a screeching, but it only does it for like 1second then stops, Its got worse the longer its been doing it at first i was like once a week now its like everytime i reverse of my drive or turn in to a parking space!

Ive had it back to BMW under warranty 3times and they always stay they cant find anything wrong, i think it sound like a noise from the steering rack, but i no hardly anything about cars so i could be a mile off!

Has anyone had a problem like this or know what it might be, any help would be great as my warranty runs out soon and i want it fixed before i will have to pay for it!

Thank you.

To me it sounds like the power steering fluid is low, I had that in my Audi, might be worth getting the garage to check that, it only happened ocassionally when the car was under load i.e. standstill and turning wheel.

My 55 plate MCS when on full lock makes a quick scraping sound and then stops, it has always done this since new, I do not get a screech though and mine has never got worse.

I would asume if your noise is getting worse then something must be wrong.

i have a 2005 (54reg) works and have exactly the same problem less the screech noise

been to bmw they have refilled the oil for the steering and changed various parts under warranty yet it is still making this noise

i am debating taking it back to them before warranty expires as they SHOULD no what the problem is

call me sceptical but i bet if there was no warranty left they'd identify the problem straight away!

im going to see them tomorrow
- they will not provide written details of work carried out under warranty which suprised me
- they have changed various parts already
- the car has been in 3 times previously

So im basically going to tell them not to return the car to me unless the problem is solved as the noise is not one i feel comfortable with especially doing motorway miles

power steering failure is high on my list of things to avoid!

Monkeynutz, i feel the exact same way, i always seem to get fobbed off by my dealer, they never say what they have done if they carry any work out, and they normaly just say its ment to be like that or they cant find any fault!

Really winds me up, i think im gonna do the same as you and say dont give me it back untill you have fixed the fault and i wont get anymore noises

Where do i stand if ive said i think its the power steering pump or maybe the rack, and ive had it in around 3-4times and they always say "no fault found" and then one of them does go once warrant is over? will they still have to fix it?

very much doubt they will cover anything under warranty once the warranty expires knowing how most BMW dealers operate

here in Manchester they quote £500 per 12months for an extension in warranty but you have to ask for this extension BEFORE the warranty expires.

before i hand over the keys again i will ask for an engineer to come out to listen to the noise as its not constant and sods law will be they dont hear it when checking the car.

if it were just a noise id probably live with it but i can deffo feel it through the steering which is the worrying part

i dont expect to go to the dealers and be educated as its nearly always the customer educating the stupid muppets behind the desk

fun fun fun
