Hey all, I recently went to my dealer with a slight intermittent knocking noise coming from the clutch when I release it. This noise will also be there when I slow down in a high gear just before putting the clutch in. As the engine goes to about 1000 rpm, the slight knock occurs.
They said it was the gearbox, so they replaced it. (20000) miles. - Got the car back, its a 2006 mini one, so a gertrag box. Now the reverse gear goes in without any grinding??!?!! Have they modified it??
But the worst thing is, the knocking noise when lifting the clutch is still there!!!! - I not taking it again until its next service, but what could this be??!!
Also just for info. Although my gearbox was replaced under warranty, value of the work was £2500 TRADE!! Ouch!
It might be the dual mass flywheel dampers knocking. There have been many problems with these. Your flywheel has two metal flywheels with a friction material between them and dampers to soften the engagment motion. If the friction material wears or the dampers go bad, you will get knocking or scraping noises.
Mine went in today for a knocking clutch noise. They rang me up and said "we are very unhappy with the noise, so we are going to take the gearbox out to further diagnose the problem."
He said it could just be a simple new clutch job (covered under warranty)
I will let you know what they find it out to be.

Had mine done on my MCS not too long ago, it was the clutch and flywheel that was replaced under warranty and all sorted. There are a few threads on here about it and its a known fault to BMW.
Kocking noise when clutch out, press clutch in and it goes away. Thats what mine was doing
