Flashing dashboard lights and speedo not working

Hi everyone please help.
I have a 2003 52 plate cooper s with 77000 miles on the clock. Recently when I went out to open the car when I pushed the keyfob all the lights on the speedo and rev counter were flickering, the car started but the speedo and rev counter wasnt working. Then after 5 mins of driving the lights went off and the speedo came back to life. A few weeks later the car wouldnt start at all (lights still flickering on clocks) battery was flat. Charged the battery up and the car started but same problems. Rang my mini dealer and they told me i needed a new battery as old 1 not giving out enough volts. Put new battery on and still the same fault. Car has now been in to the dealer and put on the computer where some diagnostics done. Dealer has told me that car needs full new speedo at a cost of £240. Does this sound right or has anyone else had this problems or any ideas would be gratefully received. Many thanks.

Interesting..... would have said the dash module in the first place with that fault. I'm guess the rev counter and OBC are ok?

It might be the only option to get the new "speedo" or certainly get them to investigate it properly and replace the speedo if actually required. Could just be an earthing fault which was causing the flickering.
