Gearbox shot (again)!

Our 2002 Mini One has been diagnosed with a knackered gearbox.

This was previously replaced under warranty. At that time, we were told that it was a "weak point" on the earlier models, but that was some 3 years ago.

The local dealer now wants £2,400 (to supply & fit) a new one.

Before this little mishap, it was probably worth about £5,500. Obviously, in this state, I'd be lucky to get much more than £3,000.

So I have a bit of a dilemma :-
  • spend the money and get another 2 years' use out of it? or
  • get what I can for it in its current condition and put the money towards another car?

The only other thought is to look for a second hand/refurbished gearbox, but how long is that going to last (and how much)?

Any experience, thoughts, advice much appreciated.

Sorry to hear about that.

its strange, my ONE is a 2001 model, one of the originals and I have had no problems with it ever.

How much do you reckon you would get for it if you replaced the part then tried to sell it?? Would it be worth it?

personally, i would buy a 6 speed Gearbox off ebay from the S, they tend to go for 500 and then speak to 1320's about a cost of fitting.

Or alternatively get the Dealer to push BMW for goodwill, say that its the second time the gearbox has gone and you would'nt expect that from any other brand so why has yours gone again. i think if its already been replaced once under warranty theres a case there to push. but youw ill need to push the dealer on it.

However, i'd take the car off your hands for 3k......

As Ant says you may, (Should!), get some goodwill out of MINI. If not check out this thread as there are some recon prices etc. in it to give you an idea. If I was in your situation I would probably go for the 6 speed Getrag conversion 1320 autos offer. See the links below.

1320's price included in link below but this may be out of date now.

Good luck and I hope it's not to expensive for you.

But if you want to sell the car on in the future and not have to explain a totally different gearbox then still get in contact with Paul at 1320Autos and ask about a repacement gearbox. I bet you can have a used or recon box fitted for less than £800 if you want too.
