Where's all my coolant gone?!? Just noticed that my coolant level is way below the 'min' mark. The engine temp is normal though. Have had my mini cooper since Jan '06 and have never noticed the coolant drop so low. I don't notice any leak near the coolant resorvoir either - although not being savvy with car mechanics I haven't checked anywhere else for a leak. I will go out and buy more coolant tomorrow but am just wondering why this would have happened? Any help/advice/suggestions appreciated. BTW is there any particular coolant I should use? Tnx, CP

Hi CP I am having the same problem with my mini cooper. The car has been back to the main dealer four times (five times when I contact them tomorrow) and they have not yet solved the problem. To date they have changed the Radiator, thermosatic and housing, and still it looses water over a two week period. I will let you know how and when my problem gets solved.

well one things for sure, you both have leaks somewhere in the coolant system! and you can buy BMW coolant from your local mini dealer or you could just get some from halfords, doesnt really matter really but i always use original mini products!!

Since you give no clues, ti can be leaking anywhere in the coolant system. The common areas are ; the reservoir, the radiator and the thermostat housing. Less common are; the heater core, the headgasket and hose clips. It woudl also be possible for the coolant pump unit to leak although I have not heard of this to date.

I forgot, I use Zerex G-05 coolant. This HOAT (Hybrid Organic Acid Technoogy) matches the original type that came in my 2003 MC. This coolant is a Chardonnay yellow. Do not mix OAT with it (orange color) without a thorough flush.

I had the same problem. Easy to fix. Turned out to be leaking from thermostat housing and gasket. Bought from bmw parts were thermostat, gasket and housing for thermostat cost was £58 inclusive of vat. took half an hour to take parts of and the same to rebuild. Refilled with coolant and water job done.
