Doesnt really explain the burning smell. Runs fine without the air con on??

I am having a nightmare with my EML light on a 2001 Cooper as well. It does not happen every time it's driven but when driving the engine light and EML will come on out of the blue and the car looses it's power and goes into 'lymph' mode. Most times, this is resolved by turning the engine off then back on. On some journeys this can happen every mile or so. Other times, the car runs absolutely fine . However it does seem to be gradually getting more frequent and severe. I am having trouble starting it some times, with it missing and backfiring when it does decide to start. But then most of the time it's fine![]() My brother thinks it may be a sensor on it's way out as it does not happen all the time . It's really bugging (and worrying me) I am waiting for a friend to 'plug it in' at his dads garage. Hope you get your sorted and it's nothing serious

The answer will be in the fault codes. Maybe the MAF sensoro or throttle body. Get it checked! EML is telling you its serious!

A friend has plugged it in today to reveal the following fault codes: P1125 Throttle Potentiometer 1 & 2 Measurement Kick P1229 P1688 Cam Bus Fault Any ideas, been searching the forums and a potential was rubbing wires from the throttle body back towards the windscreen rubbing on a corner of the cylinder head, but we can't locate any rubbing wires when we just looked under the bonnet ![]() Any ideas? Cheers Emma

P1688 is what I had the other day during testing. The description is "Electronic Throttle Control Monitor Level 2/3 Mass Air Flow Calculation. You need to use a proper application though instead of a code reader as then you get the freeze frame data. Mine was caused by the throttle position not matching the amount of air flow in the intake. At a guess with those errors your throttle body is either sticking or the servo is getting stuck/fluttering.
| Thanks for this post from: | ||

Thanks Mini M, any way of checking at home if the throttle body is sticking/ servo stuck/fluttering? Need to keep costs to a minimum as on maternity leave at the moment (in the last 2 months I have had 4 new runflats, new exhaust and service). ![]() Did you sort yours out yourself? Thanks Em

awch!! Not sure what that is in GBP (£'s) but sounds a lot! ![]() Glad you got it fixed though! Mine has been reset at the garage - 2 weeks ago, as yet, EML & engine light have not re-appreared. Hoping that is the end of my problems and I can enjoy my MINI!
