Oil leak

Just a quick one,

has anyone had an oil leak by the drivers side engine mount? just noticed it yesterday so i mopped it up to see if it would re apear, and it has.

What could be the cause of this? i have just had a new supercharger pulley fitted last week.

The car is an 04 Mini cooper S, its one of the 1st face lift cars.

Your engine mount has blown a seal and needs to be replaced. This is a fairly standard failure.

is it an expencive job, and would it be worth replacing it with performance parts rather than standard?

There are no performance parts that I know of. Replacement is basically the same procedure as the pulley as you have to get the engine off of it. After that, there are two bolts to be removed.

I assume that this is an 05/06 model...

they are indeed a common failure, upping the engine torque also applies more force on the mount,
There are as yet no stronger mounts ,but engine dampers are available to dampen the forward/aft movement of the engine and poly bushes available with less flex

You will not be the first or the last to follow this route, makes you wonder why manufacturers dont fit POLY in the first place?

I am not a manufacturer, but knowing the difference between Poly and OEM bushes might tell the tale. Poly is stiff and not as resilient as the OEM, creating vibration and harshness not appreciated by many street car owners. Generally, race cars get poly, street cars get nitrile.

Makes you wonder why they decided to change the engine mount design so it cant take much torque and break all the time Lucky pre-facelift owners.......

White Cooper engine mount, idle

My late '04 post-facelift MCS is off to the local main dealer in the morning to have the engine mount fixed. It has been leaking oil for a week or so and seems to have failed spectacularly over the weekend - there is oil all over the place and a big puddle on the floor. This seems to be a really poor design fault and there are lots of posts on here from other sufferers....

I'm also having them look at my dodgy idling speed - another fault that no-one seeems to have completely cured.... I do like the MCS but I am losing patience with it - it is back at ther supplying dealer next week to rectify a dodgy paint job on the near side rear quarter. 'Cherished' my @rse!!!
