Engine temperature gauges at full!!

I've not driven my car for around 6 months and when I finally got it out the garage the battery was completely dead so I had to jump start the car to get it going, I drove it around the block a few times and then noticed that the engine temperature gauge on the right was at full and the fan was going at full pelt.

Has anyone come across this before? Wondering if I've killed my mini some how I'm going out to check the oil and the coolant levels.

So it looks like it's the coolant, the tank is empty and there is this brown paste at the bottom of it, which apparently is normal for 02/03 cars.

Cars dont really like being stood for lon times -the thermostat could have stuck closed and the coolant boiled away during the overheat- hope nothing too drastic has happened to the engine

I'm going to get it looked at. I think I drove less than a mile with it on red. Hopefully it's OK. The battery is being charged then I think it's off to the garage next weekend.
