Argh! Convertible Roof and Lambda sensor problem

Took my wife's Mini '04 Cooper Convertible into Wellsway BMW in Bath today to have the following problems looked at:

1. Problem retracting the roof (sunroof section only retracts on one side)

2. Intermittant Engine warning light

Was told that a) we need a complete new roof assembly (£1600) and b) we need a new Lambda sensor (£261) including fitting.

What is particularly galling is that the warranty ran out last month and we had already taken it in to have an inermittant roof problem looked at (at the time the couldn't find a fault).

Frankly, I'm gutted and don't really want to do next. The service guy said he would speak to BMW on my behalf and see if they would contribute to the cost.

Can anyone offer any advice!

Hi there....

Regarding your roof, see the threads below. Its a common problem and yes, it needs a new mechanism. If MINI don't stump up with a decent goodwill gesture, contact MiniMania the site sponsors who will be able to help with a new mechanism, much cheaper than the dealers. Click the directory up the top

Here's the threads - print them out and wave them under the customer service managers nose

I have been told that if you already mentioned the problem to your dealer before the warranty ran out, then you should go back and complain and they should fix it. How true this is I dont know, but worth a try.

I am new to the forum, However, My wifes car just had the exact same problem yesterday. The sunroof section only attempts to open at the drivers side and nothing is happening at the passenger side. It is an 04 plate, 24,000 miles and out of warranty. Help.

United-Kingdom Same roof problems on mine!

Hiya
I searched this site today as I have EXACTLY the same problem happened to my car. I took it in to Mini who without even looking suggested it would cost me £120-£160 to diagnose however would more than likely be a new roof. When I queried this (he hadnt even looked at the car!) he said he had seen it before but that I shouldnt worry as they would see what they could do for "Goodwill"!!! Forget that.... I will be fighting to get this done for free. Under the consumer act if you buy goods which dont do the job they are supposed to then you are entitled to ... something. Not quite sure what but if anyone else is interested in fighting as a group please let me know.
