P1787 & P1698

I haven't been able to find much on this problem. Got a 2002 mini with CVT. The car runs smoothly but acts as if its stuck in the equivalent of 2nd or 3rd gear. Also an X is displayed to the left of the gear selection display on the speedo, Like xP or xD, whatever gear is selected. A friend with access to a good diagnostic computer pulled codes P1787-bi-polar stepper motor open circuit, and P1698 - ECU malfunction.
Online I have found references to a transmission control unit also called a GIU, but the descriptions of where it's located have been inaccurate or unclear. Does anybody know where it's located?

I have found what I think is the ECU in a slot on the left side of the battery box, which is where one desription said that the GIU was located. Other pictures show the GIU mounted on a bracket, but no location is given.

i'm just guessing, but the stepper motor is probably inside the CVT, and does the "shifting". What I need to know is how to determine if the problem is in the actual stepper motor, of if it' s an ECU or GIU problem.

The GIU (Automatic Transmission Control Module) is situated under the dashboard up above the brake pedal, bolted to brake master cylinder flange. (A7000 on circuit diagrams). Hope this helps

Found the solution

Mini Cooper Transmission Relearn Procedure


If the gear selection display on your Mini Cooper has an x before the gear selected,

like xP or xD or xR, then you need to run this procedure.

The usual cause of this is a dead or disconnected battery for a long period of time.

First make sure you have a good battery that will hold a charge or fix the charging

system problem.

Get the car someplace where you will be able to drive for a mile or two without

interruption on a fairly level road.

Follow ALL steps and don't skip anything.

Clutch Adaptation

1. Begin with a cold engine and start the car. Shift to N for 10 seconds, then shift

to D for 10 seconds.
Shift to P. Display says xP.

2. Repeat the following ten times. Shift to N for 3 seconds, then shift to D for 3

seconds.
Shift to P. Display says xP.

3. Repeat the following ten times. Shift to N for 3 seconds, then shift to R for 3

seconds.
Shift to P. Display says xP.

Step-up Ratio Adaptation

1. Accelerate vehicle to a speed greater than 80 km/h. Don't be afraid to go above

the redline on the tach for a few seconds. At this point the car may buck and snort

a little as it tries to get into a higher ratio. As soon as it settles into a higher

gear and the revs are above 4500, rpm let off the accelerator quickly. Don't

gradually let off.

Allow the car to decelerate naturally and you will feel the ratio changing as it

slows to nearly a stop. Do not use the brakes to stop.

You will probably have to repeat this speed up and slow down procedure at least two

or three times until the x is no longer displayed. Each time you will notice that

you are able to go faster. Make sure to get the rpms above 4500 each time.

2. Stop the car and repeat steps 2 and 3 of the Clutch Adaptation procedure to setup

hot transmission clutch values in the computer.


3. Turn off the ignition switch completely.


Now you can start the car and drive normally. Do some aggressive driving and some

normal driving to give the computer a wide range of values to work with.

If your display now shows E in front of the gear selection display, or the car never

"shifted" to a higher ratio during the Step-up Ratio Adaptation, you have other

problems.
