United-Kingdom Electric window not working

Can you help a newbie - sorry if threads posted before.

My passengers electric window does not work, fortunately it's stopped in the fully closed position. When i press the switch i can hear the relay clicking - what does this indicate please?
Also, i've read about thumping the door above the speaker - is this the main one or the tweeter?

Cheers

Driver Electric Window Stuck, Not Working!!

I have just registered on Mini2 so I can say a big thanks to all that posted solutions to fixing my stuck driver window.

Its a late 2003 Cooper. The window just stopped working and didn't drop down when you open the door either. When trying to open the window with the toggle switch I could hear a clicking noise from the door inners.

After looking for solutions on this site I tried the following...

Holding the toggle up for 20 secs with egnition on, then tried holding down for 20 secs. No joy...

Then tried the 'wack the door above the lower speaker' method. No joy....

Time to 'pop the hood' and disconnect the battery for 5 mins. Remember to disconnect the negative!!, buy no joy again....

Finally, started the engine, then held the toggle up while giving a wack to the door above the lower speaker with my fist...........BINGO!!!!!!!!!!

I din't know exactly which solution worked in my case. I like to think my MIni rewarded my persistancy in trying every trick!!!!

Many thanks MINI2 !!!!!!!!!!

Getting ready to go to Silverstone next weekend. Got my fingers crossed for nice whether, but as it's a British Bank Holiday, I won't hold my breath!!

Thanks to this forum i've fixed my drivers window!!!!

One sharp Ka-Pow to the door just above the speaker and hey presto!!

Note to paulgoacher make sure you're pressing the window toggle switch in the direction you want the window to move whilst banging the door panel... It should work... I was slightly jubious about beating my baby, but i'd rather do that, than pay someone at BMW £200 for the privilage!!!

I had this problem, too, fortunately it was covered under warranty. I think it turned out that the motor which controls the window was broken.

Another thank you!

We've only had our 51 plate Mini One for less than a fortnight so I was rather miffed on Saturday to find that the driver side window had stopped working. Although it came with a 3 month warranty from the dealer, that only covers major engine components. We also had a flat tyre two days after getting it (which meant getting a new tyre) so I was resigned to having to put it into the garage again.

Of course, I came here first and found the "fix", tried it and it worked! I didn't even have to hit the door that hard so I'm well chuffed.

What an excellent forum this is.

I too registered here to specifically thank everyone who has posted a solution.

As most others have experienced my (passenger) window stopped working and I was left with a click in the door when the toggle switch was operated.

After reading the various fixes I went out to the car, turned the ignition switch to on (didn't bother starting the motor), and gave the door a whack above the bottom (large) speaker whilst holding the toggle switch down (because the window as stuck fully up).

Thunk, thunk, thunk voila... it works again.

I have to add two thoughts --

Thought one: I'm not sure if the Brits will know this, but Americans (at least those of us in middle age) should. Who remembers the TV show "Happy Days"? Remember, how Fonzie would never have to put a coin in the jukebox? Instead he was able to give it a magic whack with his fist and, as if by magic, it would play the song he wanted (without even needing to select it). I hereby propose that this maneuver be named "Fonzie-ing".

Second thought -- I'm not sure if anyone has bothered to delve into the real cause of this mystery - if so I haven't seen that. Here is my guess as to what is happening. If you are familiar with electric motors you know that current is supplied to the commuator by brushes. The motor spins because the brushes come into contact with alternate plates on the commuator and transfer currrent this-way-and-that to the windings in the motor reversing the magnetic polaritiy of the windings and making the motor spin. In the course of my adventures I have come across the occasional motor that would somehow come to rest in a position where the brush/commutator position wouldn't let current applied to the motor start it spinning. If you turned the motor even the slightest by hand and then applied current it would work. My guess is that whacking the door is having the same effect of turning the motor ever-so-slightly as to get things going again. I'd be curious to know if anyone can tell me if my theory is right or wrong. If it is, then this fix might work indefintely - provide you don't crack the door panel.

Cheers.

Hey Guys,

New owner/First post: I too had a problem with the passenger door window on my 03' S after a friend failed to shut the door properly, then bumped it with her bum to finish the job.

I tried the speaker space bang but ended up disconnecting the battery to get it to reset itself. Even that didn't work immediately - but after a night of standing it suddenly started working again??

Great forum and excellent advice.
