Strange noise...

Hi everyone,

Sorry a newbie question for anyone regarding my Mini Cooper S 2003. 40k miles.

When lifting off the throttle a very odd noise happens, sounding like the engine is gasping for air but as soon as you put even the slightest bit of throttle on the sound immediately stops.

It sounds like a whale underwater or something bizarre! Can't quite explain what it is exactly but it's definately only when coasting in gear or when the engine's not under any throttle.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi James,

I dont think this is anything to worry about, this just sounds like the car is sucking air into your airbox. The air feed comes directly from the front of the car straight into the airbox, in other words it has no resonator like the ONE/Cooper does so the sound will be more noticeable.

The sound is alot more pronounced with an induction kit

Ah cheers spoony. I completely put this in the wrong section thinking 2nd generation mini's meant the remake of the originals!

Anyway, that sounds about right, like a sort of induction noise but with an original airbox. The odd thing is it's seemed to get louder thoughout the years. Maybe in need of a new air filter or aftermarket induction kit?!

check the rubber pipe on the top of the head-they can moo if the rubber has gone soft -easy fix

Ah, ok that's worth looking at. Where could I find a replacement hose if it has gone soft?

And it does sound like a moo-ing noise! Very weird. Could I replace it with some similar rubbing from Halfords or the like?
