Help! Oil light at low revs

Hello, can anybody help me please?

Changed the oil and filter on my 53 plate Cooper S last weekend and today, the oil light decided to come on. It only lights up when it is warm and idling, as soon as I increase the revs, the light goes out.

Found out today that I was sold the wrong oil... lovely Halfords staff gave me semi-synthetic instead of fully. So dropped the oil and replaced it with the proper stuff and changed the filter again...light still on.

Ive been told that it might be a problem with the filter? (Halfords again- desperate measures!) Ive ordered one with BMW but Im not convinced that this is the only issue (although I hope it is!!)

Any help greatfully received!)

Sarah.

I assume that you checked the oil level and don't need to add some oil? Sounds like a pressure problem.

Yep, checked the levels with both changes and its fine. No leaks as far as I can see either. Never had any problems with the light before the oil change.

First things to check are that filter is correct type and that it is correctly fitted. According to the Haynes manual "MINI One/Cooper up to 07/2004 have a guide sleeve and spring fitted between the element and cover, Cooper S models and vehicles manufactured after that date do not have the guide or spring. Do not remove the guide sleeve and spring from the cover."
Also check / replace the oil pressure switch and / or wiring to it. Oil should be 0W-30 Castrol Edge or similar in UK climate. Some other useful info maybe here:-

I also remember hearing that someone had an STP filter and the ring supplied for the canister was the wrong size. It bunched up allowing a pressure leak that caused low pressure when idling. This in turn caused the light to come on.
