Clutch Replacement

hi, just a quick question? anyone here changed there clutch before? I'm just wondering the best way to go about it, iv heard people say you have to drop the subframe but thats an awful lots of work. how did you do it? i was thinking it would be easier to remove the engine and then swap the clutch?

cheers for your responses.

i dont know what model your mini is but when i did the gearbox on my 52 plate cooper 5 speed box i didnt remove the subby, although i am led to believe by somebody who works as a tech at MINI that they remove it, but imo its easier not to.

what i did instead was removed the front bumper, bumper support and n/s wheel arch liner. and the front section of the subby that the bumper support bolts to its about a foot long and held in place buy 2 bolts. now the radiator assembly can now be moved forwards a fair few inchs and the gearbox will just fit thro the small gap.

BUT if its the 6 speed box this could be a totally different situation and the subby may need to come completely off i dont know.

hope this helps

On the ONE and Cooper...

You can remove the "pre facelift" box (pre 04) without dropping the sub frame (carefull when putting it back in though... really easy to damage the clutch diaphragm spring!).

The "post facelift" box (getrag one) can be done without removing the subframe... but it is a nightmare and it is strongly recommended that you bite the bullet and drop it.... especially if there is nothing seized, it is then possible to drop subframe with rack, PAS pump, and anti roll bar in about 30 minutes.

I would imagine independants would be anywhere between £400 to £600

Havent a clue what dealers are charging... but I can guess it wouldnt be cheap!

Me personally, around about £150 to £200 ish depending on the MINI type, age, etc.

I was quoted 900-1000 by a BMW dealers for a new clutch and fitting. Independant like thinkmini or 1320 probably do it for about 500 ish

sorted my clutch on the weekend.....was a very easy job, took about 4hours.

was very dissapointed with how the clutch plate had just fell apart, wasnt even worn that much. my pressure plate and thrust bearing were mint..! my mini has done 60k which i dont think is too bad considering some of the things i've read on here. :O

cheers for your help people!
