Engine Mount

Hey guys,

I recently took my MINI in for its last tlc service. While it was in the mechanics noticed three things.

1) O/S engine mount is leaking
2) Rear exhaust mount broken.
3) Oil leak, possibly sump.

The engine mount looks fine but it does look like a liquid has leaked out of it previously. Its stained part of the engine bay. Does this sound like engine mount fluid?

I want to fix them myself. Does anyone have any experience with the engine mount replacement? Im just about to go and buy a Haynes manual to assist.

I have looked at the back box and cant see a broken mount, there seems to be only one and it looks fine to me?

I cant see where the oil leak is but there is one and its very minimal.

The engine mount will have leaked blackish/brownish oil from underneath where the seal has cracked or broken. If its been like it a while it will be nicely dried on. I presume the car isnt under warrenty (if it was the mount would be covered)?

I think its a fairly cheap and easy part to change though and im sure ive read of a couple of people on here having done their own.

how old is the car ?

frankly I would take these "faults" with a pinch of salt !!

these are the common things that the dealer either makes up and/or deliberately causes to make money from warranty work.

you only need to read this forum to see that it happens too often to be genuine.

The car is an 05 mini cooper.

Sorry I should have been more specific in the first post.

Like I say though the car jerks when switching from 1>2>3 and when setting off. Surely a sign of a broken engine mount. Plus it does have the brown/black stain under the o/s mount.

I just wonder why the previous owner never had it fixed?

Thanks Morgan, I am going to replace it myself, I have the manual now and it looks pretty straight forward, i have all the tools necessary.

Just one question, does anyone know the best place to buy a new mount from. There is a GSF parts shop near me so I will give them a call later and see what they have.

Seriously?

Yes, they are fairly common problems and the engine mount is pretty easy to do. I have had to do it myself.

Actually, the best replacement method is to swap it out like you are doing the pulley. Also, you will needs a "special" socket to get it off. You can get it at the local hardware store. I can't remember it right now, but the book should have it listed. Don't start the project without it and don't try using something else to get it off. Also a little anti seize compound (copper paste) will help on that bolt as it does start to corrode.

It is a torx socket (E12 I think) that you will need. It was not a common tool that I carried and I had to go buy one.

Hi all,

I see many people have experienced the old leaky mount problem... It has just started to appear on my 55 plate Cooper. The problem for me is that the Cherished warranty expired on the 01st Jan 2009. Before I go down to the stealer... Does anyone know if there is a recall notice for this??? As ideally I would like not to have to pay for the repair as the vehicle is still on lease.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Mark

Result...

Mount confirmed faulty. Replaced by main dealer for £47 as they agreed to go halves given the warranty had just run out. They also steamed around the failed part to remove the hydralic oil from the bay.

No recall... But given the sales manager had they same issue on a 6 month old cooper conv. They where sympathetic.

Good luck to all...
