Whining/rattly noise - possible gearbox?

Hello,

I have discovered a strange noise in my 2001, 50000 miles Cooper. It is only there when the engine (and probably gearbox) is cold and audible primarily in 2nd gear and sometimes in 3rd gear as well. It sounds quie "rattly" like a box of screws being shaken or something like that. The strange thing is, that it sounds as if it comes from under the driver (left) side footwell.

The gearbox shifts fine, as far as I know, though a little tight, but I suppose that it is meant to be that way..

So - what do you think? Where does the gearbox sit? And would a 2005 gearbox with this code: GS5-52BG-TBHA fit?

Maybe I should add: The noise comes both "off and on boost" and is there from 3-4,000 RPM. If I press down the clutch and then "slip" it fast, the sound comes on as well just as the clutch engages, so to speak. My hope is that it is a vibration from something else under the footwell, but....

I have discovered that the noise is most apparent "off boost" ie. when decelerating. 2nd & 3rd gear - and in all temperatures it appears. Any suggestions?

I have exactly the same problem. But mine is more prominent around 2K-3K RPM.

It could be the throw out bearing and bearing guide rattling, there is a modified bearing and guide/sleve you can get from your local BMW/mini dealer,
could also be a box but, best to get a oil sample from it to check for metal filings.
