serious looking oil leak

Hi All,

We've just left our 55 plate mini one d (31K), full dealer history (6 months out of warranty), at Dick Lovett with what looks like a pretty nasty oil leak dripping on teh drivers side just behind the front wheel. looking under the car, there is oil sprayed over the front wishbone area and under the bonnet, spray on the drivers side of the engine, around the belt.

Fortunately, when we noticed the drip, we were very near to the dealers, so we've just left it there until I can speak to them on Monday.

Any ideas what it might be?

It looks expensive No warning lights or nasty engine noises, so I don't think any serious engine damage. I'm guessing a seal has failed somewhere.

What do you think are my chances of getting Mini to stump up for at least some if the bill?

Cheers

Dave

6 months out of warrenty is a tricky one!! it depends if you can prove the part was faulty 6 months ago?

personally i would say the warrenty wont pay out, fingers crossed its just a seal that can be cheaply replaced!

Well, for all those who are interested, the diagnosis is that the crankshaft oil seal has failed on the LHS of the engine (looking from the front). Fortunately enough oil remained in the engine to maintain oil pressure and so no internal engine damage has resulted.

The oil has contaminated the aircon/power steering belt, the fromt brake on the drivers side and the anti-viration damper, i assume, part of the engine mounting somewhere - ouch!

The good news, BMW Mini have agreed 100% parts and labour - so top marks for Dick Lovett Mini in Bristol for sorting that out. Just need to wait for the anti vibration mount to arrive from Germany

Great result on the warranty and lack of engine damage. Still a pain in the backside though!
