That's good to hear you must be glad to finally be back driving your MINI

Absolutely would recommend them - you will need to be a little patient though as getting through can be hard as they are very busy... worth it though.

Brilliant warranty - 2 yrs / 24,000 mile !
The other places were only willing to give 6 months

They will collect from anywhere in the UK

Certainly - I believe it was £650 + VAT
Then I also paid £150+VAT to get the car taken there from near Slough and £100+VAT to have the car brought back
And I think £80+VAT a one of the diffs needed replacing and a bit more for the clutch...

Very happy though.

United-Kingdom R65 gearbox fluid

I noticed these threads discussing fluids for the R65 5 speed box .

I used to work for Castrol the JCW site in Sussex ( now closed) was one of my accounts . The guys there told me an easier way to re fill the gearbox after draining especially if you dont have a ramp . Remove the air filter box ..bit fidley but okay .. re fill with correct volume through the reverse light switch on top of box .
I' ve changed mine about three times now . I am now running a 75w90 grade.. Mobilube 1 SHC .Thought it may make the shift heavy but no differece at all compared to the MTF 94 .Another option would be ' Morris Lubricants 'Lodexol FS 75w90 another very high perfomance product .
If the box fails with either of these two then you may as well give up !

The other thing he did say is that is the gearbox was reconditionable when he took it out, then he would do it for £450 instead of £650... unfortunately mine was well and truely kaput.

Hi, my Mini has been collected by Cleckheaton's, but I'm still waiting for them to let me know if it's ready for collection! As you state, they are extremely difficult to contact! Thankfully I'm still mobile because I'm borrowing my father-in-law's spare car. I'm amazed that seeing Cleckheaton state they are replacing numerous Mini gearboxes that this 'fault' hasn't been reported to BMW and the car 'press'. If we could get more Mini owners to come forward with similar experiences to ours, we may then be able to approach BMW and get retrospective compensation!?

You need to keep chasing them I am afraid... very happy with mine though and it does seem to be running quieter too. The economy seems to have improved also.

Hmm... not so sure we would get any compensation - we would need to get a lot of people together to stand any chance...

hey everyone, I just joined. Bought my first MINI the other day! It's an '02. I just discovered all the faults of the earlier models. I don't know if mine is an R50,R52 or what. I also don't know what gearbox it has - the midlands or getrag. It has 77k miles on it and has a clean carfax. It was serviced on a regular basis and had 4 previous owners. It drives fine though. Doesn't make strange noises, no leaks, everything works, etc. there is some rust on the tailpiper/muffler area but its not bad. Any advice/insight? How can I find out which gearbox I have and if it is the midlands, should I have it replaced? About how much would that cost in $USD? I have a 4yr/48k mile warranty however it only covers 50% of part cost and labor.

You are probably good - the advise would be to get the gearbox engine drained and replaced... have a good clean out and you will probably be fine... Mine gave next to no warning about what was going to happen...

topic resureection, but to keep on topic. I was going to do this myself but I think it would be easier to take it to a garage and ask them to do it like kwik fit. I am wondering if anyone has done this and how much it cost? And if they had the correct fluid or should I take it to them?

cheers!

I would supply the 2 litres of MTF94 gearbox oil required yourself to whoever does the job. I have found few garages or dealers keep this special oil in stock and some may use some other gear oil if they can't easily find MTF94. It is not a big job to change the oil.....an hours labour charge max. maybe for a good mechanic with the right tools and a set of ramps. There was plenty of metal swarf on my magnetic drain plug and in the oil but gearbox still ok......touch wood!

(I found the MTF94 at a local Land Rover Dealer (LR Part No. STC 9158).......my local Mini Dealer next door to LR don't sell oil !!)

Swarf on magnet pictures:
