Steering wheel vibration/shaking during high speed braking

Hi all,

I seem to have a problem whilst braking at high speeds with my 2002 (52) first gen Mini Cooper.

When going approximately 70-90 at high speeds and then braking (gently, but not lightly), the steering wheel shakes vigourously until the car has completely stopped decelerating.

Is this a known problem? Should I ensure the wheels are balanced?

Thanks.

A couple of things you could try, 1 is to check right pressures in tyres, check wheel bearing by grabbing the wheel and see if it wobbles. then go to tyre fitter to check the balance of wheels. When did you last have a service as you might need brakes looking at?

If it only occurs under braking, I'd also be inclined to suspect the brake discs.

All the best,
Andrew.

Agree with some above, check pressures, bearings (although that would usually make a noise too I believe) and get the tracking, wheel alignment and balancing at a local tyre place.

When my runflat tyres were coming to the end of their life I also had vibrations when going above around 60mph and when braking.

Tyre pressures were all ok, so we took it to the local tyre place to get them to check it out.

They said all the balancing was correct, and no wheels were bucked, but that when the Runflat tyres are close to being replaced they can cause a vibration.

We changed the tyres 3 weeks later and all vibration was gone.
