DIY Removed Battery and ECU - Problems?

Hi,

My Fiancee's 2005 Mini One Seven has been leaking a small amount of coolant every week. I had it pressure tested which didn't show any leaks. A quick search on here and I was shown the Thermostat Housing problem.

All the signs pointed to this being the problem, so this afternoon I set abut stripping it down so I could have a proper look. I removed the airbox, the battery and the ECU so I could remove the battery box and get good access.

The Thermostat Housing is showing signs of coolant escape so thats been removed and I have ordered a new one along with thermostat and gasket from Minimania.

A couple of questions regarding this.

1. When I reconnect the battery and ECU (Obviously ECU 1st then battery), am I likely to encounter any problems with anything thats powered or ECU controlled?

2. Has anyone an idea of how much coolant/antifreeze costs from BMW and how much will I need. What is the mix ratio and what is the volume required in the engine.

Thanks,

Brian.

Why not phone your dealer for a cost of the coolant at the same time they would let you know how much is required. for a comparison you could ring Halfords.
I wouldnt have thought you would have a problem with ecu unless you have fused it. The only thing you may need to do is put your personal info in, ie kmh or mph, the time and date.

1. Nothing to do, just plug it up.

2. Any anti-freeze will do and the mixture will depend on your climate. Follow the instructions on the bottle for mixing. You might also be able to find some that is premixed.

Cheers for the replies. Put my mind to rest after a mechanic told me of some cars that need things "Re-energised" after battery/ECU have been removed.

I'll just be going to the local motor factors for the antifreeze/coolant - shouldnt be expensive I would have though.

Just awaiting the parts being sent from Minimania then hopefully she'll be back on the road for monday.

Find out from the dealer which coolant to use. It is a long life one and it cannot be mixed with just anything and still maintain its long life. My 2003 uses a HOAT coolant called G05 which is yellow. This coolant is available at the local auto store, no need to pay dealer price for it. You should have no problem when reconnecting th ebattery, the car might have to relearn some tranny adaptations if its automatic but that's it.
