DIY 2005 Mini Convertable Cooper Water Leaking At Rear Body Moulding

Just purchased a 2005 Mini Cooper! Love it! Only problem is that the canvas top allows water to seep into the body of the car! The area is on both sides of the vehicle where the rear side portion of the hood converges with body of the car. The prior owner tried to resolve the problem with apply a small amount of 'tar' to hold the canvas to body of the car. Looks ugly and isn't working. What are my options? Any help is appreciated!

The following images are of both sides of the canvas top from the back of the vehicle.

I beginning to suspect that the problem is not the canvas top but the underlying frame preventing the side canopy becoming 'flushed' with the body moulding. Your comments on this are welcomed!
