Passenger Airbag cover - open?

Ciao ragazzi,

I have recently bought a 2002 Mini Cooper from a dealer here in italy. With my limited knowledge of cars I had checked the car to see if it had been in an accident (checking engine bay/underneath/under carpets in the boot etc)..

I had no complaints as the car drives & looks great. However, upon getting the car home I found the passenger airbag cover was open..I have to admit I thought myself it was a glove box until I saw the airbag inside.

I can see that the plastic seals have broke away (cleanly) all around the edge.

Has anyone else any experience with this, I know it's not normal, but is it a definate sign of a crash/malfunction or possibly a heavy handed user?

Is it expensive to get the cover repaired/replaced?


Hope you guys n' gals can help as I'm somewhat of a mechanical muppet when it comes to this kind of thing.

Mine is the same, it's very easy to break that joint as it's designed to pop open when the airbag goes off.
Mine does sit flush normally and it doesn't cause any problems to just leave it.

The cover is about £65 but it's not really worth the hassle to change it.
