DIY Power steering stays on when ignition off?

hi, power steering pump stays on when i turn the car off, which flattens the battery and I guess not great for the pump.

Is this a simple fix – changing relay/ electrical or good clean?
Or a costly new pump?

In the mean time all I can think of doing is disconnecting the battery when not been driven.

Does anyone know of a fuse I can take out instead of dc the batters every time?

I had a quick search and see its quite common but not an answer on replace or fix

Thanks
Rob

Hi Rob,

Sorry to hear you're having problems.

Have a look at the link in my signature and you'll find my guide to power steering pumps. There are some links in the guide to posts by some of MINI2's technical gurus who made a DIY procedure for cleaning out the pump, which might help in this case.

Good luck!

All the best,
Andrew.

Fuse = FL4 100A Electric Steering control unit/Hydraulic pump

Disconnect battery or pull 100A fuse above, otherwise PS pump running constantly flat out can overheat PS fluid and cause damage to the steering rack oil seals, or in worst case catch fire!! Should be ok to drive a short journey to garage but pull fuse while parked up.

This has been reported as the cause for many MINI spontaneous combustion car fires,
don't park it inside a garage until fixed.
