battery termial cover melted

My battery was dead the other day but started up fine after a jumpstart. Before the jumpstart however I noticed the positive terminal under the hood had melted through the plastic cover. Any ideas what might have caused this? Is there a short that caused my battery to drain?

My second question is I noticed another wire coming from the positive terminal under the hood wrapped in a black loom does anyone know where this wire goes? I have a feeling it could be the source of the problem.

Thanks!
Erin
