Back box outer skin rusty and falling off

Rusty bits of my back box keep falling off, I believe this is the outer skin from the research i've done on the site. Just wondered if anyone else has this problem and whether it needs replacing?

Quite a large back corner piece was scraping on the floor yesterday so I had to twist it off as it was jamming between the road and the underside of my back box.

Mine looks the same but the original box keeps doing it's job (4/2002).
The clamp rusted off a few months ago so I got kwik fit to put a new one on.
It is in two pieces with car hanging straps at the top and bolts/holes at the joint.
You might want to have a look at that before it drops off.

I had an MOT advisory in 2007 but no mention in the 2008 or 2009 MOTs.

If rusty bits start hanging off and are noticeable then I carefully take them off.

I have the same issue on mine. If you look at most MINIs 4-5 years old, they almost all have to to a certain degree. I keep meaning to get mine replaced with a stainless steal. If you replace it, it will start to rust again otherwise.

Hi ALL,

Go and buy the Play Mini Exhaust from P&L Mini, my old back box shred all its layers and looked rubbish. This new exhaust is still side exit and looks and sounds fab. Not loud at high revs or motrways and is very nice with a small amount of blip on the throttel Stainless Steel so even better. A must have

And no I ndont work for P&L Mini hehe

Thanks for your help guys, I like the sound of the Play Mini one, apparently I cant just buy a back box, gotta buy a centre section too, doh!

PL Mini don't sell it anymore, there's a message on their website. So ill have to go direct, but price isn't too bad.

Hi, the bracket on my Mini One 2001 rusted and snapped off, i got fast fit to replace it at £44 as i was in a hurry and although the exhaust is secure it is a lot lower than it was with the previous bracket and to be honest looks pants - any ideas, is this correct?

Mine has loads of rust on. It looks naff but apparently is not a problem. Its just an outer skin and the actual exhaust is fine.

Just an up date, I checked today and my exhaust was direct from Play Mini, they were very helpfull, all they need to know is what shape bracket you may have around the back box due to a design change at somepoint by BMW Mini. (KINGDOGGY this is where you might have gone wrong) Also this exhaust includesthe centre long pipe too.

The back box will eventually go and start blowing out somewhere. If you are interested in the Play Mini you can hear it on You Tube, YES thats right some people are sad enough to video the sound of their exhaust worth a laugh anyway so check it out!
