Hi, since the snow i have been having three warning lights coming on.
Sometimes they dont come on at all, and other times they are on all the time.
It is the orange traction light, orange abs light and the red handbrake light.
I am going to be trading in/selling my car soon but need to get this sorted first. Trouble is im scared to take it to the garage in case it is expensive.
Its a 2001 mini cooper!
Any ideas??????
Thanks
Chris
Most likely to be a faulty ABS Wheel speed sensor - there is one on each wheel so you will need a quick diagnostic check to tell you which one is faulty.
I have the same problem with my R53 MCS. The ASC (traction control) light, the ABS light and the brake warnning light come on at various times into a journey.
A bit of history. The carpet and central console is not fitted at the moment (long story) which means I don't have the "flat tyre" reset switch. Previous to the above problem the tyre pressure warning light used to come on at about the same time into a journey (this timing seemed to very random). I was never able to reset this light because the reset switch is not fitted. This has been going on for about 6 months.
I know the ABS, traction control and the tyre pressure warning system all use the ABS wheel sensors. I'm just wondering whether the initial tyre pressure warning was an indication that one of my wheel sensors was on its way out and now that it is getting worse it is triggering the ABS and ASC lights instead?
Does anyone know anything about the wheel sensors on ebay? They seem to go for about 1/2 the price of the BMW part. Are they genuine parts without the BMW markup?
Right, thank you for your advice! My car has now been to the garage and been on the diagnostic machine. I have an internal fault with the ASC (ABS) unit! £1330 new from bmw - which is the only place you can get em new!! luckily i have managed to source reconditioned one for £250!!
Its possible that during the snow, the sensor connector got water in it. Pull all the connectors and spray them with electronics cleaner, this will get rid of the water and clean theconnector. Just had this problem on a new Jaguar, the spray fixed it.
Chrissytink. have u sorted this faulty yes as I have the same problems on my 04 MCS and took it to BMW who also said it was an internal fault with the ASC Hydro Unit. did you fit this yourself and if not has anyone on here fitted one before and is it a pain in the AAA
Hi there, yes my car is now 'fault free' and running well. Found a garage near me - Marlin (i think) who sourced a recoditioned ASC unit and fitted it for me for half what BMW quoted
Thanks for the reply Crissy. you wouldn't happen to know if the new ASC unit needed to be programmed when they fitted do you ? I've also getten hold of a second hand one and I wanna fit it my self.
Also if anyone else is reading this thread. can you twell me if when you bleed a MCS's brake system in the right order does it bleed out the ACS unit too ???? mant thanks Alan
I´m also having this problem with the ABS unit. The fault codes said that the unit is faulty or something like that. The local repair shop guy used somekind of Bosch OBD-diagnostics tool that gave different kind of codes that are not even listed on the fault code topic here... The car is -02 Mini One and it doesn´t have the ACS.
So is it possible to install that control unit yourself or does it need some kind of configuring with OBD tools to make it work with the existing system? And is the only control unit for the abs system mounted on the hydro unit, or is there other control boxes that also affects to the ABS system?
I´m getting tomorrow the USB-OBD diagnostics tool from my brother who has a 1998 BMW which also is equipped with OBDII diagnostics, so it should work with my Mini also with the right program (INPA)? Then i could get more exact fault code from the system for you guys to discuss at. uzzled:
Did a little testing today with the car and noticed that when you normally start the car and don´t use the brake pedal, the warning lights go all off. As soon as i press brake, the orange ABS-light and red !-light goes on and won´t go away unless you shut down the power and start the car again. What could cause this type of behaviour?
Edit: I found on another topic where someone had a faulty ABS pressure switch... Could that be the trouble maker if it doesn´t maintain the proper pressure in the system and it shows itself when pressing the brake pedal?
This is strange that the problem solved was by itself. The ABS-light is no longer on when driving with the car. It does the normal "light test" when you start the car, but then stays off whatever i do with the car. I have no idea why the problem disappeared but still keeping fingers crossed that it doesn´t start that strange behaviour again. =)
Or not... Now the damn lights are on again. The car is going to the local BMW service tomorrow and hope they can find an answer to this problem. Still i´m hoping for a cut wire or something like that because the lights are not always on so it doesn´t seem to be an control unit failure. I´ll post here as soon as i get some information on the problem.
Check the front brake wear sensor wire. Its clipped to the abs sensor wire on the left hand wheel (at least it is on U.S. models) The bracket that holds the abs sensor can cut through the strain relief of the brake wear wire. In my case this wasn't obvious until I started to follow the bently manual instructions on removing the abs sensor wire. I was looking into it because the dsc light was coming on for no good reason and not turning off unless I shut off the car.
Back from the service and the news are not good... They diagnosed that the ABS-control unit is faulty and replacement costs a thousand euros. I´m going to check those wires that Oldpaint advises to but i fear that they do not solve this problem. The strange part of this problem is that the lights are not always on so it could be a soldering problem on the ABS- pcb?
Also i got the part number for the control unit needed to be ordered: 6757063 but any of the ebay parts doesn´t match that code when i tried to find a used part. Does the code have to be exact with that or is it like the first 4-6 digits have to match?

Hi guys got the same problem with my 04 cooper. The abs light on and run flat light. Tried the abs in a private gravel car park and seems to be working. Im assuming there are four sensors for each corner but does anyone know if they are interchangable. As in buy one and try them until fault found? Also will I need to enter a reset code like when I recently changed brake pad warning light? Thanks for any response guys
Got my problem fixed. The ABS-control unit was broken and we replaced it with a used one because it was half the price that the dealer would have been taken for a new one. Now crossing fingers that anything else won´t get broken.
I've had the ABS, Brake and ASC warning lights on permanently for a while now.
I had always thought it was a faulty wheel sensor, I was in the middle of the slow process of swapping them out without much luck.
My focus now has been a major parts swap between a wrecked 2006 MCS and my 2002; yesterday whilst working in the engine bay I found the cause of the light trifecta.
The wiring loom for the ABS control unit is routed under and around the bracket holding the the ABS unit. This loom was rubbing against the bracket and/or body and had worn through, shorting one of the wires to ground.
Getting to this wiring loom is not easy though.
Cheers,
Dave
