I would pay for an independent expert report from somebody who knows about gearboxes. It shouldn't cost too much as they are only looking at the gearbox noise and not the rest of the car.

reverse throwout bearing?? NO!!

The noise you have is the clutch release bearing. A low cost part, but which does require the engine and gearbox to be separated to replace.

In this day and age where motor mechanics can only look at ECU logs, the kind of numptys you are dealing with cannot make basic mechanical noise assessments.

Aw1234 is right sounds like the thrust bearing, if the rattle is only quite then ull be fine for a few months until the bearing colapses, then changing gear will become hard and may cause damage to the pressure plate. A simple problem but a hard change i would advice having the complete clutch assembly changed when replacing this part as the reffitting process is a tough one and gearbox removal isnt something you want to be doing to many times. A clutch at trade proce usually goes for around £90. However if this noise gets worse and the selection of gears is difficult then the gearbox may be shot as your car will have the layland box fitted which is awful, check for fluid leaks and a rich smell around the gearbox side of the engine this may mean a damged seal (common) resulting in a damaged gearbox. Hope this helps
