United-States 2005 Automatic - Bearings in trans noisy - Mini says new transmission needed!!!

I have a 2005 Automatic transmission Cooper with 87,000 miles.
Recently when driving in slow stop-and-go traffic I heard a horrible squeaking/whining noise. I took to to my Mini dealer and they found that when the 2 wheels were going separate speeds, a bearing noise could be heard from the transmission. They quoted me $8,600 for a new transmission!!!!!

About 2 months before that, my power steering went out and had the pump replaced, they replanced my coolant and did a system flush, and flushed/cleaned my fuel injector all for $1,700... NOW THIS?

I have noticed when I just start it up it cycles about 3 times and sounds like it's going to shut off, then revs up again...once I drive it, it's ok.

Anyone out there experience this? I am in shock that they would quote me $8,600 for a new trans!!!! Crazy!!! Do I need to do this?

I am taking it to a Transmission specialist tomorrow to see what they say.

Any insight/comments is appreciated!!!

I think you have the CVT. Failure prone and expensive to repair.

yes, it's the CVT. Didn't know it was 'failure prone'.
Anyone else have problems with their CVT?

Sadly there are tons of them out there and nobody will or can actually work on these transmissions so your only recourse is to buy a new one. You might be able to find a non-mini mechanic that can do it cheaper than a dealer but it will still be expensive.
