noise when pulling off .

The last service mentioned that the front brake pads and discs needed replacing, so I assumed this was the cause of the noise. Had them changed out a couple of weeks ago but the noise has not gone away.

I then assumed that the brake calipers were maybe seizing and sticking the pads to the discs after braking, therefore making the noise when I pull off. I took it to a mechanic that I'm aquainted with, but it seems that the noise is hard to replicate after the car has been driven for a few miles (the journey was 30 miles/45 mins). He told me to try and pinpoint where the noise is coming from, when it next happens. He was very busy and couldn't really offer much more, other than he'll be able to look at it properly in about 3 weeks.

I took the car back to work and left it for 5 hours. I then got a couple of colleagues to stand either side of the car as I pulled off, backwards and forwards. They are both sure that the noise is eminating from the front but it doesn't seem to be coming from a particular side. Beacuse the noise dosen't seem to come from one particular wheel, I'm now wondering if the problem isn't the calipers (unless both front calipers are seizing). What else could cause this type of noise? As I said the noise is like a quietened down version of a bus braking, a moaning noise. It also seems to happen more if I'm pulling off and turning at the same time, and happens whether Im going forwards or reversing.

One other thing that the last service mentioned was that the Control Arm Bushings need replacing. Mentioned this to the mechanic, he did some braking, backwards and forwards but said that it didnt feel like they need to be urgently changed. Could these bushings be causing the noise? Mechanic didn't think so but I'd be interested to hear oppinions from the group.

Thanks in advance for any help
Marc

Yep, did exactly that. When I let the clutch out a certain amount, the noise begins and continues until I dip the clutch again!

I can now pull off without the clutch making the noise but I have pull off very gently and smoothly. Even after a 45 min drive I can still sometimes get the sound by pulling off aggressively!

I have the same issue with my 2006 R53, anyone managed to get a definitive diagnosis of what causes it?

Interesting thread on the problem here: http://www.mini2.com/forum/first-gen...st-gear-3.html

If mine was still under warranty I would be insisting they sort the problem out. Guess I'm just going to have to live with it for now, until something gets worse...

Hello all I have an 05 S that has the same symptoms of grinding while turning and while taking off however mine is also pulling to the left or right on occasion while braking. Also even after driving for an amount of time the sound does not go away but remains there. The warranty just expired on the car and I would like to avoid going into the dealer without some knowledge of what is wrong. Front brake pads and discs are new on the car.

I have also noticed that the clutch pedal faintly squeaks and feels as though it is hanging up during the first couple of inches in travel and is fine after that. Lubricate pedal?

Thanks all,

Brian

Where are you located? We might be able to suggest someone that can take care of you at a better price than a dealer.

It's the clutch....can you feel the vibration through the clutch pedal?...I know it sounds like the brakes sticking on...But it's not...If you reverse out get the car moving then the sound is there ...Dip the clutch ...It's gone..It's a strange one I agree... It happens when there is load on the clutch as when taking off...It's as if the clutch is trying to grip the flywheel and not quite making it then the springs work then no sound.
