Black Cooper My passenger window won't go down!

Hi, I have a 2003 Mini Cooper, and the passenger window just stopped going down. It's not the fuse. Help!

Can you still hear the relay clicking when you try and open the window?

If so then it's a very common problem. Seems to be caused by the small movement that the window does whenever you open or close the door, causing a flat spot in the motor, therefore it gets stuck.

It's possible to get it going again by thumping the door panel with your fist (or better still a rubber mallet), just above the large speaker (the motor is behind here).

It worked for me on my failed passenger window and it's still working 6 months later! This method has worked for countless other people too.

I've copied the exact instructions that I used from another post:

With the car in aux or on -- sit in the seat with the door open.
Press and hold the window switch up
Immediately, while holding the window up toggle -- with your fist -- punch / hit three inches above the large speaker -- three times. <bang bang bang>. Don't be easy on your MINI.
Let go of the toggle switch.
Press and hold the toggle switch up for 5 seconds.
Lower the window completely.
With the door still open
Raise the window completely. The window should have now "re-indexed" itself.
In case the indexing didn't work -- it would be wise for you to lower the window just slightly before closing the door.
Close the window.

Good luck and please report back whether it worked or not!

Just came on here to post exactly the same problem with my drivers side window.

Followed Cokey's instructions in the above post. It took 3 or 4 goes with the thumping getting harder each time but this did work!!

Thanks!!

Glad to hear it worked for you. Can't actually take credit for the instructions as I found them elsewhere. First time I tried, it didn't work but thumping harder did the trick. Make sure you open and close the window on a regular basis, to keep the motor from sticking again.

Word of warning to anybody doing this 'thump fix' - don't hit the panel so hard that you damage it. I read of somebody actually punching though it (I think it's made of particleboard or something)

If only we could fix the power steering pump this way!

$900 for a new power steering pump installed. 3 thumps with my fist would have been a lot cheaper!

This technique has worked on my car a few times. When I tried it this time it didn't seem to work, but 3 days later I was able to open the window.

I just bought an 02 Cooper. Advertised at £3000. Got £200 knocked off because passenger window didn't work and passenger side front bearing noise. Bearing cost me £66 and window worked with a few good thumps. Bargain

I will have been doing this for 10 years next month.
The window motor often gives up the ghost when the weather is hot.
