2003 Mini Cooper - Passenger door central locking not working

Greetings all on this sunny Saturday afternoon.

I have read all of the central locking related threads but thought I'd post my problem as I haven't seen anything similar.

Little bit of history: I've had my Mini for just over a month. Bought it last month after having inspection II and RAC inspection carried out on it. Everything has been fine however...

All of a sudden my passenger door isn't working with the central locking. That is to say I use my key to unlock the car and the driver door unlocks with no problems, but the passenger door doesn't. When I drive off again the driver door auto locks and unlocks when I stop my engine, however the passenger door doesn't. I can open the door from the inside though - which obviously lifts the latch.

I noticed this last night, the last time I drove it (bank hol Monday) it was fine.

I booked it into Mini (Chigwell) this morning for Thurs. They tell me that they charge a standard diagnostic fee of £85 and this is the most I'll have to pay.

They did however say that if it's something that takes 5-10 mins to fix it will cost considerably less.

I have no choice so have booked it in. However I thought I'd take a look on here to see if there are any similar issues posted.

First impression - I think it's a motor thing as you can hear the passenger side making a noise when it's supposed to be locking/unlocking... It's not completely dead - just doesn't do anything.

If you have any similar experiences or ideas about what it could be I would appreciate insight. I don't want to take my car to any mechanic to start playing around with something they don't know about hence have booked it into Mini so they can get to the root of the problem.

Look forward to your help. Enjoy your day! xxxx

Hi, I have something similar on my 2004 Cooper, my passenger door opens from the outside to let the kids in, when I get to my destination, the kids cannot open the door it won't even open from the outside. Other times it will open, I don't know what to do. I think I will have to take it to BMW an pay what ever they ask to get it fixed, Tony in Tasmania

Update: Took the car to Sytner Chigwell this morning. Left it with them. They called me back to say the car needs a new lock on the passenger side. Cost £310 (which includes their £85 diagnostic charge). Ummed and arred over this as the car locks with central locking - so it's not like it's completely defunct.

Bottom line is that this could have happened at anytime - it's just unfortunate it happened a month and a half after I bought the car. It's unavoidable. I could cry but I want the car to function properly. It may not be a new car but it's new to meeeee! Oh the work (parts) are also guaranteed for two years.

Work will be done by this afternoon. Got them down to £270 which is still steep but what can one do. Unless someone happens to have a contact for Chigwell that can sort a girl out!

Door locks

Had my door lock out of the car yesterday, a bit fiddly but not that hard, be aware that there are 2 cables, one from inner handle and a shorter one from outer handle, mine wasnt opening from inside? The reason was that the outer cable had dislodged from lock ( it clips in to a plastic holder) refitted it and lubricated and works like a charm now, outer handle cable might be either broken, on plastic outer cable holder damaged ?
