My Gear Box, Clutch both went and my car wont start..errr help!

Hi All,

I am new to the this website..I have heard great things and seen some good threads..

This is my first post so sorry if its repeating past disscusions.

I have a 52 plate Mini One. Bought it back in July 2010. Had no probs with it until today. I noticed a strange noise whenever I pressed the clutch down, like a high pitch noise as if something was rubbing slightly. Then it would go away once the car was in gear and the clutch released. Then the clutch itself felt lighter than normal! Car seemed to run ok, when the 1st gear began to stick and then be hard to put in. gears had been fine generally although 1st sometimes felt a bit stiff. I pulled over as I felt something was wrong and turned off the dam thing. When I tried to turn engine back on it would not start at all. Gear is stuck in 1st and wont shift. Clutch when pressed seems to stick!

All in all a bad experience, any ideas?????

I am no mechanic, but reading some posts on here it seems i m a victim of a ******** gearbox!? I left the car parked where it was, got the AA coming to pick it up 2moro morn. I think this is gona be pricey...does anyone have an idea of a possible cost to replace a gearbox and clutch i guess?

Any recommendations on where to take the blasted thing? should i go with a bmw dealer or avoid the high prices? Does anyone know it my mini is still under warranty?

Thanks all

Mini's are the best

Alan....

5-Speed Midland gearbox £595
5-Speed Getrag gearbox £690

Recon box supply only from £325
(Ask for a quote on upgrading from Midland to Getrag as additional parts are required........from approx £1300)

Your MINI is no longer under warranty.

im afraid it sounds like your in for a costly repair, I myself am waiting on afew quotes and living in Northern Ireland is just adding to the problem as there are no specialists here!.

You will probably find you may need a new clutch and possibly more work due to your car not even turning on.

mine is currently very loud but pulls fine in each gear and goes into gear perfect.

I am nearly tempted to hand mine back to the finance company as its probably going to end up in a negative equity situation after all these repairs!

thanks for replies guys! An update, had the Mini towed today to a garage, turns out it would turn on because of a combo of handbrake, stuck year and dodgy clutch.

AA man got it running and said it seemed the clutch (bearing thingy) prob had gone. Gearbox might be ok, cars sitting in the garage in a long queue until end of next week.

Will keep u lot updated!
