Tighten / re-adjust sunroof to stop creak

Hi all,

I have an 02 cooper and the sunroof is making a racket, its silent when open and horrid when shut.

I have checked the deflectors and stuck some kitchen roll in there and shut it so its nice and snug and that didnt help.

If i slowly rev the engine whilst stationary I can make it rattle, what I have noticed is if I open the window and apply pressure the the rear right corner (uk car) the noise can be stopped.

Outside I can see when its fully closed the rear right of the glass is a little high so I believe that is where the rattle is coming from,

I assume you must be able to adjust these things, and if so how as I have never dealt with a sunroof like this so have no idea.

Hopefully others can look at this also as there seems to be a few that have un-identified noise from the rear of the glass, for ages I thought it might be the pull out netting, but now we have had some dry weather i opened the roof and was shocked the noise went away.

The only links I can find are dead about adjusting the sunroof, but by the power of a time machine

MINI Motoring: Fixing Sunroof Squeal/Rattle

Fixing Sunroof Squeal

which are the two i found linked, but they are the same and about noise when opening.

nobody has any experience ?

its now got really bad and last night when it was fully opened it had a bit of trouble closing It was ratting just on idle this morning so ha a good feel and just behind where the rear clasp that raises to lock the rear down when you fully close it is another bit of plastic, I think this is possible the housing for the blind, anyhow if I put pressure on this i could stop the noise but if i revved the engine there was still a little noise, but i suspect i wasn't able to exert that much pressure with just one pinky.

I removed the plastic surround and I think there is a bolt in the corner just above the drivers head that holds all this down tight?

and idea how to get to this as the headlining is very stiff and not sure how to get access, does anyone know the screw type? i assume i need a right angle tool of some type and try to wedge it in there somehow?

ideas welcome as its doing my head in and likely only to get worse.

a deluge of replies

Having had more time to play with the noise now its so bad I can make it happen whilst stationary I assumed tightening the screws on the bottom corner by the drivers head would help, this made it stop rattling on idle but rev the car and it still happens no doubt when I drive to work tomorrow I will be ready to kill once i get there

I have had a good poke an feel and it almost seems like the outer part of the roller blinds is making the sound or applying pressure to that calms it, I also notice now that if I bang the glass from outside the car I can hear it rattle so something must be loose.

Does anyone have any links for any sort of sunroof work or blind change or anything other than to sudgest the front wind deflectors which it certainly isnt?

The noise is driving me mad and all i find in searches is change the whole sunroof for £1600 which frankly is not going to happen and a **** take, they put it in and can change it so it must be able to come out and or be adjusted, there must be something that simple that has worked loose as there are not that many parts as its basically a hole in the roof with 2 lumps of glass.

due to the limited light left after work ive not had more than about 10 mins each evening so far to check on this, today when I parked up for work I had a bit of a better look, I can make the rattle by closing the door or tapping either the glass panels from drivers side, and also by tapping the outer roof on the drivers side.

I am beginning to think the rattle is the right side of the cartridge against the roof. Perhaps putting pressure on the internal blind parts is exerting this on the roof mount and stopping the rattle?

I think it might be a case of having to remove the roof lining to get a better look

any links for a guide to do this?

Cheers for that, didn't look on youtube which is a pretty epic fail :/#
the process looks long and slightly fiddly but not all that daunting given some time and space and a spare pair of hands as the last thing you want to do is damage it when removing it.

I have delved below the headlining, or peered under it from the exposed edge by the sunroof opening and looked at the mounting screws, and one just above the drivers seat looks a little loose, it also is badly worn so have removed it, will have to get a replacement screw and then tighten it up, hopefully that will be all that is the source of the offending noise. Otherwise I think it will be time to remove the entire headlining.

took said screw to the parts desk, after some discussion and measuring they think they know what part it is, over £7 for just one ffs. They are not sure but wont order one of each as BMW would refuse to take the others back....

They have ordered it but got a call later to say it wont be here tomorrow as its listed as a back order and will take up to 5 working days for a single bloody screw, so now the roof rattles even more. I honestly dont know if I can stay sane for a full week :/ I thought the point or rip off part prices was so they can afford to have stuff in stock for a quick turn around. With this delay it would have been easier to go to a dam breakers yard.
