Woke Up To My Mini's Windows Fully Open??

Hi,

This morning I woke up to the sight of my mini cooper s 2003 sitting on the drive with its windows all the way down.
Luckily it was a dry night!

I thought to myself, I must of accidently pressed the unlock button on the key while in the house and the windows have gone down, but upon entering the car to go to work, I found that the handbrake was covered in a sticky oily/dirty substance... :/

I am now very worried as I live in the middle of no where in North Wales where crime is not heard of...

Has anyone ever had the window problem? And is there any way any oil can get onto the handbrake? I'm trying to think of other possibilities.

Rhys.

Hello Rhys,

I don't know about the oily handbrake, but if you search for "Christine" (as in the Stephen King novel) you'll find quite a bit of information about the windows. I'm working through the same issue right now with my 2009 Clubman.

Good luck!

Have you had a replacement windscreen about a year or so ago? (it's a 2003 Mini, so I'm assuming it's had at least one replacement windscreen ).

Our Cooper S had the windscreen replaced by Autoglass after a post stone chip fix developed into a crack but their normal procedure (at least at the time) is to reuse the gasket around the windscreen rather than fit a new one. The result was that after about a year it perished and the one night the S was parked outside the garage, it rained and leaked in through the top of the windscreen, dripping down the rear view mirror onto the console. This shorted out most of the electrics, including making the central locking and alarm go mental when we tried to open it. Fortunately all under warranty and it was picked up and fixed quickly by BMW Mini Emergency.

It's possible you've had the same and the oily substance is perished rubber mixed with water from the morning dew or previous rain/windscreen wash. The effect on the electrics is pretty random depending on how much water gets in and where of course. Have a look to see if the gunk is on the rear view mirror and could have dripped down.

Thanks!

Yes, I had my windscreen replaced last year. Everything has always been fine.
But I shall have a look at the mirror to see if there is any type of substance on it.

I think I might of pressed and held down the unlock button on the key fob as the key does work from a far distance and I keep the key in my back pocket.... (which I will NOT be doing from now on

Thanks again,
Rhys

I have had this problem, still do to be honest. Mini Cooper S (2004)

Had the car 1 year and its done it 3 times now !

Reading on here I was told to hold the electric window button in the up position for 30 seconds to reset some part of the system that controls the windows.

Did that and a few months later the windows did it again

It did it again 2 weeks ago but not done anything about it yet. I did read on hear to call the main dealer and get a software update, no idea how much thats gonna cost though !

I have tried pressing and holding unlock on the key but mine does not auto down the windows so it cant be that.
