my car is vibrating!

Hi everyone, new to the forum but have visited often when I've had problems with my mini!

I have my 02 plate mini one for just over a year now, nearly 100,000 miles and sorry to say I have had lots of problems with it - radiator, overheating, suspension problems, broken passenger door/window, 6 AA call outs! - writing it all down makes me wonder why I haven't pushed it off the edge of a cliff! But it hasn't put me off wanting another.

Anyway, the latest is my car is vibrating/rattling a lot! It is particularly noticeable when I am stationary, braking and/or pressing the clutch. It doesn't feel like it is vibrating as much when its moving but don't know if it is then just being disguised by other noises? I can hear a rattling noise and my seat and steering wheel actually vibrate! Does anyone know what this could be?

It passed its MOT recently (shock!) and I questioned whether it could be something to do with the exhaust..they gave it a good wiggle and said it was fitted alright, just that instead of a gasket fitted there was some sort of putty/silicone instead? Basically a cheap job by who I bought it from. I've been aware of it for a long while but have held off from taking it to the mechanic because I can't afford it but want to get it sorted now before winter sets in.

I am in no way technically/echanically minded as you can probably tell but any insights would be appreciated!

It's hard to tell but could be that the car is misfiring when idling - like a dirty spark plug or even one of your leads might be loose. That bodge job doesn't help matters without physically seeing it run i'm afraid.

The MOT isn't as vigorous as you'd expect it to be and I'm not that clued up in Mini's just yet, but from what I've seen the new gen mini's are mostly electrically operated i.e. the throttle body on the new gens isn't a cable, its literally "plug and play" , so considering that, it may be a wiring fault or short somewhere. Let us know if you find out the cause

Is it running on all cylinders?

Not sure why you would get it when stationary so would suggest at it is something to do with engine for sure.

Thanks for your replies .

I don't really know how I could tell if its running on all cylinders - it starts up fine, and doesn't feel 'hesitant', if I really put my foot down it doesn't suddenly speed up, it makes a deeper acceleration sound but doesn't stall. No engine lights come on. This might all be irrelevant but just throwing random information out there as it might be useful! To me the rattling sounds like it starts from the back of the car which is why I initially thought it could be the exhaust back box.
