2004 MINIs have a CVT not an automatic transmission and they are prone to doing what you describe at low speeds. I can't recall of hearing of one doing at 40-50 mph, but I suppose it could be the same problem. The fix for doing it at low speeds is an adjustment to the transmission's software. It doesn't always make the problem go away completely, but usually at least lessens it. Taking it in to the dealer is pretty much the only thing you can do, but if it is the software issue it isn't a big deal.
If it is related to the automatic cvt transmission control module sometimes a reset of the 'computer brain' helps......do this by disconnecting the battery for half an hour. Also check the battery is giving full power under load, an original 04 battery could be starting to fail even though it can still start the engine.
