Unhappy Central Locking - reprogram needed

I bought an r50 mini one in August and the previous owner informed me the central locking no longer worked, it didn't bother me at first as I was so in love with my new purchase but now I'd really like to sort my key out.

It needs reprogramming but everything I've tried so far hasn't worked.

I asked on totalmini.com and I was given the sequence of turning the ignition to point 1, off, remove key, hold unlock button and press lock 3 times whilst holding then release both buttons. This didnt work so then I tried the sequence of turning the ignition on and off 4 times then repeating the holding/releasing sequence above.

Can anyone help me?! Can your key pass the point of reprogramming?

If I need to go to a dealership to sort this out how much will it cost?

Thanks in advance

Hi, I have the same problem on one of ours. Let me know how you get on. I don't want to go to Mini if it's going to be an easy fix.

Considering fitting a quality aftermarket alarm system and bypass the factory immobilizer.
These transponder keys are a pain in the butt.
Here in Oz, the dealer wants $720 for a replacement.
We bought one through an automotive locksmith for much less, but it won't activate the locking either, and now we are experiencing ignition problems.

To reprogram at a MINI Dealer costs half hour labour charge.............unless you can find an independent who has suitable computer and software to do the job cheaper.

What year is your Mini? Are you sure the key battery is ok?

The key was changed for the R50 2005 facelift model year.
The 2004 owner's manual (USA) says:
"Replace (battery) if it is no longer possible to unlock the vehicle via the remote control...Only use a battery of the type specified on the battery, CR2032..."
The 2005 owner's manual says:
"In every master key there is an extended life battery that is charged automatically in the ignition lock as you drive"

Note: even the rechargeable type batteries eventually will no longer hold a charge and need replacement.

To change early type battery, lever the cover off with a small screwdriver from the base of the key....change the battery within 30 seconds... or may need re-programming to car...put the cover back on and you are done...

For info the replacement remote keys are about £100-150 in UK for the remote key and about £50 for non-remote spare. The 1st Gen remote needs programming to the car which adds a min. half hour labour charge but 2nd Gen key is ordered ready coded. Both need proof of ownership before purchase.
