Question COOPER 2002 remote central locking, does it have it?

I have just bought a Mini Cooper 2002 UK model. It only came with one key which doesnt have any remote buttons on it. The car has central locking, and I know it doesnt have an alarm. BUT should it have remote locking & unlocking????

Yeah, sounds like the original main key is missing and that you've been given the spare?

Welcome to the forum.

Just take your log book with you to your nearest dealer and they will order a new key for you. I think it cost around £80.00 but they will probably charge you some extra quid to programme the key to your car. Half an hour labour max....

From memory I paid about £100 for key + £50 (half hour labour) at Mini Dealer to program/code it to car last year. As said you need to take your V5/log book to prove ownership and they order it in from the BMW parts dept in Germany. Takes a couple of days to arrive.

I have seen a few used keys for sale on eBay, for the r50 would it be cheaper to buy one of those and get it rebladed and reprogrammed? Also will the key fobs from the newer minis work if reprogrammed? Sorry for the noob questions but having one key and having to unlock the doors with it is already driving me mad and I've only had the car for 16hrs

Not sure about the later Mk1 R50 facelift keys but the Mk2 R56 Mini keys are completely diffferent and come pre-coded to car from BMW in Germany.........used or ebay keys are likely to cause you hassle or not have all functions and most BMW Dealers will not program random used keys/modules with another Mini's ID codes due to security/proof of ownership issues, etc.
