Major problem with fan

Hi,

I have a Mini One 04. A few weeks ago I noticed that the fan would keep coming on and that it was losing water straight away. I took it to a mechanic and he fitted me a new radiator and the problem disappeared for a few days.

Recently, the fan has started to come on again but I have now noticed smoke coming from the bonnet which smells awful like burning (just before my windscreen). I have checked the water and it isnt leaking.

I am very concerned because I dont feel safe to drive it.

Could anybody help please?
Thanks

Hi

It's very hard to say with out seeing it, but is sound like something has been spilt/leaked on to the exhaust possibly. Your coolant bottle is around there so may be coolant as been spilt when it was being topped up or may be when they were bleeding the system. Those coolant bottles do have a reputation of splitting.
But if you feel unsafe i would say ether take it back and get them to check it out,
Or if you belong to the AA or RAC or simalar get them to come have a look.
Hope this help

Are you sure it is the rad fan with noise coming from front of engine? and not the power steering pump running flat out (noise low down at the back of engine near windscreen bulkhead).
The electrical part of the power steering pump motor can go faulty and start to overheat the wiring causing smoke and possible fire/burning..........if so don't drive and have checked out as said by mechanic or AA/RAC asap.

If it is electrical overheating disconnect battery until fixed to prevent further damage.
