Mini Cooper 2002 - Power Steering Whine

Hi again,

We have a 2002 Mini Cooper, done approx 75,000 miles.

The car makes a sort of whine noise when steering, only really noticeable when performing manouvers, parking etc.

Any one know of a reason for this or if its normal?

This is normal, you should be worried if it doesn't make a whining noise

Could also mean power steering pump is on its way out.

Not necessarily......many are just noisy even when a replacement is fitted. Mine has been noisy for the full 5 years I have owned it!

yep whine here too - some think it's the supercharger!! No issues with the steering...

You only need to worry if the noise changes, the power steering on the earliest MINIs was very noisy.

I actually missed the whine after I had my power steering pump changed.

Its definitely not a "normal" noise, it didnt always do it.

Mine is the same, still trying to figure out what it is. I've had a new clutch & fly wheel, rebuilt the gearbox, suspension rebuilt, all seals replaced, tyres all changed & checked for rubbing, cv joints replaced etc. The steering is now the last thing theyre lookin at. The noise occurs when turning round corners, parking etc. Not when at standstill. It sounds like a rubber on rubber friction noise.
