AC causing overheat?

I have a 03 MCS that I bought used with 35k last November. I've encountered no problems up until two days ago. After I turned my engine off, the fan would kick on. I later found that this perfectly normal, but this morning on the way to school, my engine temp gauge went all the way up and stayed that way for about 2 minutes. Then I flipped the AC off (it was on the second lowest intensity) and the needle went straight down to the middle like it should. Are these two things related? Any ideas on what could be wrong?

I had a similar problem in another car. The AC needs to be re-charged and probably a seal needs replacing as well: it's likely the coolant has partly escaped.

This often occurs if the AC is not used on a regular basis - once a week for 10 minutes for example, to lubricate the whole system.. Well this is what they told me when mine was fixed at a car AC specialist!..

I use the AC at least once a day for about 30 minutes. It's never on higher than 4 notches. And how would you recharge the AC?

I am no expert on this at all but i do know recharging the AC is not something you can do yourself, the mechanic i always take my cars to calls in a specialised firm to do it, its not that expensive though, well it wasn't the last time i had it done anyway.

Hi

I know it's a silly question but bear with me. how far in mile or time is half way home.
I take It your not loosing coolant or had work one to the system.
Does the car feel ok power wise when it's running.
When was your SC belt last changed
If all the above are ok you might want to get you thermostate checked That's the cheapest option
If it not that you may be looking at a duff water pump or a bad set of water pump gears in you supercharger

Had the same problem with my cooling - had a new radiator installed (big bucks) and then the fan kept running on to the point where the battery went dead flat! So some even bigger bucks went on a new fan motor and housing which has fixed it but cost 2K in parts and labour

Hi,

I may be missing something but my friend has a Mini cooper S 2008 and he changed his RAD to a cost of £118 with a 2 year warranty, ok he fitted it himself but it did not take him long to do the job.
