Mini One 2002 Speedo needle not working

Hi,

I'm new to the forum and just wanted to ask some advice. I've had my Mini One since May, and since buying it with around 76000 miles on the clock, the speedo has never worked properly. It will erratically stop and start, sometimes staying at zero for days, other times resting at 10, 30 or 40mph. I've had it into the garage where my mechanic recommends getting a whole new speedo (he's very trustworthy and reliable, and I'm inclined to take his advice), but I thought I'd see if anyone had any other suggestions before replacing it. All lights, fuel and temp levels work, its purely the speedo needle that is the problem (mileage seems to be registering as normal). I'm not very practical with cars myself, so I'll probably need to go to a garage for the work regardless, and would buy an internet second hand speedo if it needs replaced - although I've no idea how they go about setting the mileage properly!

Does anyone have any advice? Many thanks

I should have added that I have tried resetting the speedo using the odometer functions, which worked for short periods initially but unfortunately now doesn't work at all (still resets the needle, but no movement after reset)!

Sorry to hear that. Have you tried resetting the ecu? Could always see if that helps before spending the money. It's ashame you don't know anyone that is handy in that way that they could do the work for you. Hope they don't charge you too much.
Good luck

Emma I just done a quick search and found it's commen fault and tends not to be the speedo. It's Abs module sometimes don't know much about em but that was found out from just a quick search.
Be sure it's the speedo.

Sorry for all the posts. Found a lot of answers pointing towards the abs Sensors.

I just thought it was strange that the rest of the lights and the temp and fuel gauges on the speedo panel are all working ok - if it was an electrical fault I would have thought there would be other issues! Thanks though James - either way I think I'll be lucky to get through Saturday's MOT!

Oh dear. Maybe best thing is to take it to a BMW or someone with a good fault machine and get them to go thru to find any faults.
