2006 Mini One ENGINE REPLACEMENT??

Hello,
I own a 2006 Mini One Convertible that has a FSH (always serviced with a Mini dealer), has been well looked after and has less than 50k on the clock. In August the engine light came on and it started to sound like a tractor when at idle so we took it to Mini in Toulon (France, brought the car with me when I moved here). They have told me that it needs a WHOLE NEW ENGINE (the problem is with either a piston or valve). The quote for this is equal to the actual market value of the car. On speaking to Mini they claim that the car is outside of their 'goodwill' period and therefore can not help.
Can anyone give me any advice on where to go from here? Has anyone had similar engine problems with a car that really is not that old? DId anyone get any help from Mini?
K.

If all else fails you could source a replacement Mini One engine from here (fitted if required)
