Hi folks, new to this forum so apologies if you have all heard this before but here goes. Earlier this year we purchased a USA spec 2005 Cooper S with 25k miles showing. Just last week (car now has 33k) I noticed an oil spill on the driveway. Not horrible but I monitored the oil level on the Cooper and moved the car around to see if I could see if this was continuous. It was for a few days whereupon I added fresh synthetic to top off the level and strangely the leak went away for a time before coming back. I had the car up on a lift and could see absolutely no sign of anything. No drips, damp, nothing. Drove her home and now it' seems to have started again. The leak is located at approximately the centre front of the engine. BTW, when all this started I noticed that the dipstick had started to break just down in the tube. Wife loves the car but after reading through these forums I'm starting to wonder if she should sell the thing and move on. There are some spooky stories on here.
Thanks for any advice you can give to us Statesiders.
From Chad Miller, owner of the MINI only shop Detroit Tuned, regarding oil leaks:
Monitor your oil level often. If you're not continually having to top off the oil, you can live with it.
Get a new dipstick as you don't want to have to deal with removing a broken piece. You might think about an aftermarket dipstick which won't break and is easier to read:
Is it possible it's transmission oil? I'm told the driveshaft seals leak but you can't check the levels on the gearbox. Should be visible from underneath if you are up on the ramp though.
